Describe the general characteristics of value-oriented theories and how you feel such theories integrate with the current accountability movement.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: There is quite a bit of inquiry in this approach. There are five questions that permeate this approach: (1) In what ways schools replicate the power differentials in larger society?, (2) what is the nature of a truly liberated individual, and how does schooling inhibit such liberalism?, (3) how do schools mold children and youth to fit into societal rolls predetermined by race and class?, (4) what constitutes legitimate knowledge and how do those decisions reflect class biases and serve to inhibit full development of students, and (5) in what ways does the schools' treatment of controversial issues tend to minimize and conceal the conflicts endemic in society? Students need not use questions as long as the concepts are there. As far as integration is concerned, students should recognize that many aspects of this approach fly in the face of the accountability movement and NCLB.
