Explain why determining the amount of fetal bleed into a mother is essential for
preventing hemolytic disease of the newborn.
What will be an ideal response
When fetal red blood cells enter maternal circulation, the mother can make antibodies against any antigens
recognized as foreign. Maternal antibodies can then cross the placenta and attack fetal red blood cells causing
hemolytic disease of the newborn. This is especially a problem for Rh negative (D negative) mothers carrying Rh
positive (D positive) babies. Rh immune globulin (anti-D) can be administered to Rh negative mothers to destroy
fetal cells before the mothers can be sensitized. The amount of fetal blood in maternal circulation must be
determined so that enough Rh immune globulin is administered.
