What are the five stages through which a person who has been exposed to a catastrophic event progresses? Explain each

What will be an ideal response?

Denial. The person does not want to believe what has happened. This stage is usually very brief in officer-involved shootings.

Anger and resentment. This is usually nonspecific or vaguely directed at the person shot for making the officer act as he or she did. This stage is usually short lived, though it may return at various times during the adaptation process.

Bargaining. This stage involves the officer's wishing the bullet could be pulled back into the gun. It may be due to the officer's being worried about reprisals from the department.

Depression. This stage lasts the longest. The severity of depression is dependent on the personality of the officer, the amount of trauma involved in the incident, the agency's response to the incident, the officer's social network, and other factors.

Acceptance. This stage has been reached when the event begins to be integrated into the officer's life or the officer makes the transition from being totally preoccupied with the event to merely acknowledging that it took place.
