What precautions should you take when administering H.J.'s chemotherapy to reduce the
risk of injury? Select all that apply.
a. Independently verify the completeness of the drug order and infusion rate.
b. Dispose of any equipment that contained the drug in special biohazard containers.
c. Scrub any skin that comes into contact with the drug for 5 minutes with a surgical brush.
d. Wear goggles, powder-free gloves, and a disposable, fluid-resistant, long-sleeved gown.
e. If using a peripheral site, place a disposable drape under the arm where the drug will be
infused.
f. Use a Luer-Lok connector to attach the drug tubing to the main IV line, using the IV port
closest to H.J.
b, d, e, f
Safety measures must be instituted because chemotherapeutic medications can be absorbed
through the skin, by inhalation of droplets, or by oral contamination from residue on the hands
of the nurse. When administering chemotherapy, you should wear latex gloves (powder free and
a minimum of 0.007-inch thick); a full-length nonabsorbent gown with cuffed sleeves and back
closure; and goggles. Place a disposable drape under the patient's arm where the tubing from the
chemotherapy bag will be connected. Hang the chemotherapy bag on the pole of your infusion
pump, remove the cap from the tubing, and then use a Luer-Lok to connect the tubing to the main
line on the IV port closest to the patient. Verify the completeness of the drug order and the infusion
pump rate with a second person; that person is designated by the facility.
After the infusion is complete, promptly dispose of any equipment that contains or contained
the drug. Place the equipment in a leak-proof, puncture-proof container that is clearly marked as
biohazard waste. If a chemotherapy drug comes into contact with your skin, thoroughly wash the
affected area with soap and water, but do not abrade the skin with a scrub brush.
