Are men or women better leaders? Use the theories you have learned in this book to support your arguments.
What will be an ideal response?
- Trait and skills approaches--students may argue that women (or men) are more (or less) intelligent, determined, sociable, have higher levels of interpersonal or conceptual skills, and so forth.
- Style approaches--students may think men (or women) are more task-oriented and women (or men) more relationship-oriented. Thus, they may think one gender is more likely to adopt a given leadership style.
- LMX theory--students may think that women (or men) are more likely to understand relationships and therefore, better able to establish high quality relationships with their employees.
- Transformational and strategic leadership--students may have preconceptions about which gender may be more likely to direct organizational change or be strategic.
- Team leadership--students are also likely to state that one gender is better suited to lead teams than the other.
- Authentic leadership--students may state that women (or men) are more likely to have higher (or lower) levels of self-awareness, more (or less) likely to have an internalized moral perspective, more (or less) likely to use balanced processing, and more (or less) likely to engage in relational transparency.
It is unlikely that they will have empirical or theoretical support for these claims, which are more likely to be based on stereotypes. After several claims are made, instructors can re-direct the conversation toward seeking solid evidence to support the claims.
