Telnet defines a Network Virtual Terminal, or NVT. The NVT is an imaginary "reference terminal" written to the set of published standards. It is necessary for Telnet to translate the characteristics of an NVT to a real terminal device and vice versa. One of the most common physical devices were of the VT series dumb terminals from Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC).
