Describe the distinctive contributions of (a) Islam, (b) European colonialism, and (c) recent globalization to the region's urban landscape
What will be an ideal response?
Many of the region's urban centers are historically Muslim cities; these have a distinctive walled core, or medina, that is surrounded by administrative, religious, and other educational buildings. Nearby is the suq, or bazaar—an often cosmopolitan marketplace. Housing districts were, and are, typified by narrow, winding streets affording both shade and privacy. European colonialism transformed some architectural elements (e.g. Victorian building styles) and selectively altered existing infrastructure. Recent processes of globalization have expanded infrastructure (e.g., airports, industrial parks, luxury tourist hotels) and have modified existing building styles.
