Explain how lifelong learning will help you as a social worker
What will be an ideal response?
ANS: Students' answers will vary. Davis and Botkin (1994) suggest that the total knowledge in the world, on
average, doubles about every 7 years. In some fields, the doubling of knowledge occurs even more rapidly. As many
social workers realize from the rapid obsolescence of their personal computers and cell phones, the rate of change in
the technological sciences is simply astonishing. However, the information explosion is hardly limited to high
technology (Gleick, 2011). It affects the helping professions as well. As a social worker, you might wonder how
much of what you now believe to be true is actually false. You might ask how much of what you learned 1 or 2
years ago is now obsolete. We may reasonably anticipate that more and more of what you now "know" will become
less and less relevant, valid, and applicable with each passing year.
