How do fossil fuels form?
What will be an ideal response?
Fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas are a carbon reservoir—carbon-rich remains of ancient photosynthesizers. These fuels result from the death, burial, and compaction of land food webs over millions of years. Fossil fuels hold an estimated 5,000 gigatons of carbon. Until the Industrial Revolution, this carbon, like that in rocks, had little impact on ecosystems. However, we now withdraw 4 to 5 gigatons of carbon from fossil fuel reservoirs each year.
