In Chicago, researchers found that spatial proximity to homicide, concentrated disadvantage, and low collective efficacy independently predicted increased homicide rates. Their findings also suggested that local organizations, voluntary associations, and friend/kinship networks could promote the collective efficacy of residents and help to achieve social control. The project used multiple methods and an interdisciplinary approach to data collection and analysis, including researchers from behavioral genetics, neurobiology, child psychiatry, psychology, sociology, and criminology. The combination of methods and approaches provided a detailed examination of how families, schools, and neighborhoods affect child and adolescent development and the pathways of both positive and negative human social behaviors.
