Discuss the sexual differences in suicidal behavior between men and women.
What will be an ideal response?
In the United States, the suicide rate is higher for men than for women, whereas the attempted suicide rate is higher for women than men. Some evidence suggests that there are differences between men and women in the methods employed to commit suicide: women prefer barbiturates and poisons; if women do use a firearm, the fatal wound is frequently in the body rather than the head. It has been suggested that these methods are used because they are not disfiguring and because women are often more concerned about their appearance after death than are men. In contrast, some males kill themselves where their bodies will not be discovered by family members, such as in the woods or some other isolated area.
