Read the discussion in Worlds of Music about “Krzesany po Dwa / Going to the Village” and listen the recording while following the Active Listening guide. How is the concept of “fusion” achieved in this selection? Include a brief discussion of how the recording was created
What will be an ideal response?
• The entire selection is recognized as fitting within the popular genre of reggae, largely due to the continuous reggae "dub"--a familiar reggae harmonic/rhythmic ostinato--that is heard throughout the selection. From time to time a Górale kapela (traditional string band) plays krzesany Po Dwa, a góralski dance tune from the regional muzyka Podhala. The traditional instruments used in these parts include basy, violin and whistle. The text, while sung in English, is a loose translation of the original Górale dialect text (e.g., "Johnny" referred to in the lyrics is a Robin Hood-like symbol of freedom and justice). Modulations (sudden shifts to different key/tonal centers) stand out in the recording—see Active Listening guide.
