What is photovoice, and how does it fit in with past trends in ethnography?
What will be an ideal response?
In the past, photos were used as data in themselves, or used to illustrate or document the ethnographic record. The current trend is to use photographs as a means to enable the investigator to gain perceptual access to the world from the viewpoint of individuals. Individuals typically do not have control over the imaging of their world. This is left to researchers to capture how they view it. Images can give the individuals a voice, or a means to capture the world from their perspective. Researchers give their subjects a camera and ask them to photograph certain aspects of their lives (in addition to traditional observation and note taking), and researchers take their own photographs. Members of the community are allowed to document their community from the ground up.
