1. Supervisee is dependent on supervisor and is imitative in nature. Supervisee relies on supervisor’s guidance and direction. Supervisee lacks self-awareness and categorical thinking. Supervisees can fit into several continuums (e.g., high to low motivation, high to low anxiety, high to low tolerance for ambiguity, high to low self-awareness, high to low independent thinking).
2. Supervisee is striving for independence and developing clinical competence. Difficulties within the supervisee and supervisory relationship tend to occur. Supervisee gains autonomy and demonstrates more assertiveness by asking challenging questions and questioning the supervisor’s professional judgment. Supervisee exhibits fewer imitative behaviors and starts to work on own style by trying out new therapeutic techniques. Although more autonomous, the supervisee continues to require supervisors guidance.
3. Supervisee experiences autonomy, stability, and growth. This stage centers on personal sense of professional identity and self-confidence. The supervisee’s motivation is more stable, autonomy is not threatened, and the relationship between self and other is more congruent. Supervisees are also more objective with clients. Supervisee moves beyond formal supervision and may seek assistance with specific client cases. Supervisory relationship is more collegial and less authoritative.
