A process orientation forces people to become aware of the links between the activities in the process. A process orientation enables an organization to achieve its overall mission and objectives more easily because it gets everyone in the organization aligned with the key business processes that absolutely must take place in order for the company to attract and retain customers. Effort is focused on improving the links between activities. People understand how the entire process they are working on operates and they are also much more aware of how their day-to-day activities support this process. They can clearly see the relationships between various activities. They concentrate on supporting these activities rather than their own particular specialty. If a disconnect exists involving people, materials, information, or equipment, it is readily identified and an effort is made to correct the situation. A process focus supports the use of problem-solving and self-directed work teams. Since individuals in the organization can see the links between activities, they are more likely to work together to enhance their activities and the links between them. For this reason, continuous improvement is easier within a process-oriented organization.
