Explain why Piaget considered the development of representational thought the "key" to freeing children from the "here and now."

What will be an ideal response?

The student should be able to articulate the idea that the ability to think using symbols (i.e., representational
thought) enables the young child to think about past events and anticipate, predict, and plan for future possible
interactions with the environment. Representational thought also allows children to communicate with others using
language. Therefore, children can begin to interact with others using information about the past, present, and
future. Representational thought also allows for the development of imagination.
