To determine the patient's actual temperature, the nurse is aware that:
a. the patient's core temperature is not af-fected by environmental temperature
b. surface temperatures are the most stable
c. circadian rhythms keep the body temper-ature stable throughout the day.
d. gender and age have no effect on body temperature.
A
Despite environmental temperature extremes and physical activity, temperature-control mechan-isms of human beings keep the body's core temperature, or temperature of deep tissues, relatively constant during sleep, exposure to cold, and strenuous exercise. However, surface temperature fluctuates, depending on blood flow to the skin and the amount of heat lost to the external envi-ronment. Time of day also affects body temperature with the lowest temperature at 6 AM and the highest body temperature at 4 PM in healthy people. The circadian rhythm alters body tempera-ture about 0.5° C (0.9° F) throughout each day. An acceptable temperature range for adults de-pends on age, gender, range of physical activity, and state of health.
