Discuss at least three strategies for orienting the audience to your topic.
What will be an ideal response?
- Response will discuss three or more of the following strategies:
* Refer to the Subject or Occasion. You may be asked to speak on a special occasion, such as a holiday, founders' day, graduation, or an anniversary.
* Use Personal References or Narratives. A personal experience makes your speech more meaningful to the audience and shows them that you know the subject.
* Ask Rhetorical Questions. A rhetorical question is a question for which no answer is expected. Asking rhetorical questions in an introduction usually encourages an audience to become intellectually involved.
* Present A Startling Statement. A startling statement can be used when you want to shock or surprise your audience. Startling statements are extremely effective at getting attention.
* Use Humor. A funny story, a relevant joke, or a humorous approach not only gains the attention of your audience but also relaxes them. Stories and jokes must be tied to the content of the speech and not offered simply for the sake of humor.
* Incorporate Quotations. Sometimes a quotation can grab your audience's attention and, if cited accurately, also adds to the credibility of your speech.
