What is the theme of an “I message”?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: Teachers need to own the problem, communicate feelings without blame, and indicate the problem behavior and then the effect of that behavior and the feelings it brings out. Poor “I messages” simply tell students to stop doing something. Poor “I messages” threaten students with consequences. Ordering, threatening, and warning are roadblocks to effective communication which is not the goal of an “I message.”
