How would you service an instrument cluster?
What will be an ideal response?
?To service an instrument cluster, first disconnect the battery. This will prevent the possibility of an electrical short to ground. Also note that static electricity can damage the chips in a digital dash. You might want to use a static strap to ground your arm and prevent any buildup of static charges. A static strap is a soft metal strap that wraps around your wrist and is grounded to the vehicle.?Remove the instrument panel cover. Several screws secure it. Next, remove the screws that hold the cluster to the dash. Pull the cluster out far enough to disconnect the wires and speedometer cable. Then you can lift the cluster out. Bulbs can be replaced from the rear of the cluster.?To replace gauges or the speedometer, you must disassemble the cluster. Remove the small hex head screws that hold the plastic lens plate over the housing.?With the lens removed, you can replace gauges and the speedometer head. Screws on the rear of the cluster normally hold each unit in place. Keep fingerprints off the faces of the gauges and speedometer. They will be readily visible after installation.?Install the instrument cluster parts in reverse order of their removal. Remember to connect all wires and the speedometer cable, if used, to the cluster. Check the operation of all dash lights and gauges after installation.
