L.C.'s wife asks, "They can do surgery for everything else. Why can't they do some kind of

surgery to fix Parkinson's?" How would you describe the surgical treatments available for
patients with PD?

What will be an ideal response?

Surgical intervention such as ablation, deep brain stimulation, and transplantation are reserved for
patients who do not respond to medications. Deep brain stimulation, the current standard of care,
involves electrical stimulation of dopamine-deficient brain tissues in a way that helps to reduce
abnormal movements. Unlike ablation procedures, which are permanent, it can be adjusted to
control symptoms better and is reversible. Fetal neural tissue transplants into the basal ganglia are
designed to provide dopamine-producing cells in the brains of PD patients. This therapy is still in
experimental stages.
