Please discuss the purpose of risk and safety assessments, when in the child welfare investigation do these take place, and what are the different ways they can be conducted.

What will be an ideal response?

Safety and risk assessments are conducted after a case has been screened in to child protective services to determine if the child(ren) are at risk of imminent and serious harm.
These can be derived by consensus, or actuarial methods. Consensus is based upon the agreement of state child welfare experts about what danger factors should be included. Actuarial isbased upon the examination of potential danger factors over time to determine which ones are related to subsequent maltreatment or reported to child protective services. These can also be conducted using a combination of the two.
