Discuss ways that a group counselor can practice self-care.

What will be an ideal response?

The practice of self-care is the group counselor’s ability to maintain wellness in all areas of life (physical, emotional, social, and spiritual), despite the challenges inherent in group work. Supervision and peer consultation can provide needed support for group counselors when managing difficult groups. In addition, the counselor can turn to the resources developed by the ACA Taskforce for Counselor Wellness and Impairment. Using a self-care assessment worksheet, the counselor can identify areas of self-care that are lacking and take steps to improve these areas. Pursuing interests outside of work such as spending time with friends and family, taking part in hobbies, exercising, yoga, and meditation will provide an opportunity to rejuvenate and protect against burnout.
