If you're like me, you probably have one or two really close friends and a lot of great
acquaintances. But that's good because that's what you need. According to Dr. John Litwac of the
University of Massachusetts Medical Center, people in modern society require a variety of friends
to meet their needs. And the variety of friends we need varies over time. What Dr. Litwac says in
a book, Adult Friendships, is that the friendships we enjoy when we are young differ a lot from
those we experience as we grow older. As we develop, so does the complexity and intimacy of
our relationships.
