Describe elevator hoistways.

What will be an ideal response?

The hoistway is a vertical, fire-resistant enclosed shaft in which an elevator moves. It has a pit at the bottom and openings at each floor. The openings are protected by automated doors controlled by an operating system. Codes typically require that elevator shafts have a 2 hour fire rating and that the opening be protected with doors having a 1 hour fire rating. A metal or concrete deck is required on the top of the hoistway.
