Teachers should first check to be sure children don't have allergies to animals. Animals must be free of disease and be immunized. Some animals, such as birds and turtles, carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans and should not be part of classrooms. Instructions for the animal's care should be posted near the cage. An adult should be assigned to oversee the animal's care. Children and adults must always wash their hands after touching or feeding the animal(s).
