Answer: Expeditions to Africa promised to capture wheat fields from Moroccan owners and to obtain gold for currency, which mad become scarce due to the quickening pace of European commerce and the luxury grade in Eastern goods. Portugal also wanted to gain more territory, which meant more subjects who could pay taxes, provide more soldiers and participate in more commerce, and magnify the monarch's power and prestige.
