Explain what a controlled vocabulary is and why its use is important.

What will be an ideal response?

A controlled vocabulary refers to coding rules that limit the vocabulary that can go into a litigation support system.
Without a controlled vocabulary (particularly in document abstracts), information could be entered in an infinite number of ways with no organization. This would lead to searches and queries that would be incomplete unless the searcher could identify every variation for every search that was entered.
