Answer: The id, present at birth, consists of instinctual desires that demand immediate gratification: infants get hungry and do not take no for an answer if not fed soon enough.
Eventually the ego develops and represents the more rational part of personality. Children learn that they cannot always expect immediate gratification of their needs. The superego comes later and represents the internalization of society's moral code.
