What texts should we use for beginning reading instruction? What have we learned from the research.
What will be an ideal response?
Hiebert warns us to not rely on just one criterion when selecting books for books for beginning reading instruction. We should consider repetition of high frequency words, repetition of phonics patterns and at other time works with more meaningful books. Teachers should also consider that many of the texts currently designed for beginning reading instruction are too difficult for many children. Most students need word repeated much more frequently than are in current basal texts. Out of a total of 100 words each individual word needs to be repeated seven times. Currently children are experiencing words repeated only two to four times.
