Describe differences in human male and female cognitive abilities. Relate this to exposure to hormones.
What will be an ideal response?
Research has shown that males perform better than females in visual-spatial tasks that involve rotating objects and in mathematical skills. Females have been shown to perform better than males in verbal fluency and writing but not in other measures of verbal ability such as reading comprehension or vocabulary. Support for the idea that these differences result from hormones comes from studies of people who have undergone hormone treatments. Older men undergoing testosterone treatment have improved spatial ability, as do transsexual females who take testosterone to appear more masculine. Transsexual females also show reduced verbal ability. Transsexual males (who take estrogen to appear more feminine) show increased verbal fluency but reduced spatial performance.
