Provide two examples to explain why there must be a balance between effectiveness and appropriateness in order to be a competent communicator.
What will be an ideal response?
To be a competent communicator, a person must have both
appropriateness and effectiveness, not either/or. This is because many
messages sent only appropriately, but not effectively, can be misinterpreted. For
instance, if I am mad that my roommate has numerous visitors in the room and it
is very late at night, I may be appropriate and not confront the roommate at that
time, however the communication is not effective in making the room quiet. In the
reverse, people can send an effective message but be highly inappropriate,
which is not a competent way of communicating. For instance, while in an
argument, if one romantic partner makes the other cry during an argument, the
conflict may have ended (effective), but it does not mean that the couple handled
the conflict in an appropriate manner.
