Explain how parathyroid hormone (PTH) acts to increase blood calcium ion levels

Parathyroid hormone stimulates osteoclasts (bone resorbing cells) to liberate calcium from bone into the blood. PTH also increases calcium reabsorption by the kidneys as well as calcium absorption by the small intestine through promotion of Vitamin D activation.
