Explain the effect of darkness on human activity cycles and what cues (or loss of cues) seem to be important for regulating the cycles.

What will be an ideal response?

As shown in the study of the Greenpeace volunteers, a primary cue for setting our circadian rhythms is light. In the absence of this zeitgeber (time giver), but still having other time information and social contact, the volunteers experienced free-running rhythms of about a 25-hour interval. However, other research has shown that humans and other animals maintain rhythms closer to 24 hours when artificial light levels are low. Light does still seem to be important to determining when circadian cycles start, as most people with total blindness have difficulty with insomnia and maintaining circadian rhythms. In addition to sleep and waking, circadian cycles also impact body temperature, hormone secretion, and urine production.
