Ans: When there are large disparities and limited access to care or persons choosing not to access care for various reasons, there is a public health responsibility to educate and encourage prevention before there is a burden to the individual, the family, and society. Therefore, mental health promotion is very important to African Americans who are an underserved ethnic group. Comprehensive mental health promotion should follow a model that 1) moves beyond mental illness to health and well-being, 2) uses community and cultural strengths, and 3) collaborates between mental health professionals and trusted community resources. This type of mental health promotion will inevitably help reduce disparities and promote efforts focused on structural factors such as discrimination and poverty.
