Support groups are extremely useful to caregivers as opportunities for social interactions. Support groups can be organized around a particular topic such as personal care, conflict resolution or accessing other support systems. They are a source of social interaction for the caregivers. Some support groups are designed for particular cultural groups and are particularly sensitive to the cultural issues that permeate the caregiving relationship. Caregivers can otherwise become very isolated as they become more immersed in the day to day tasks involved in ongoing care as well as other responsibilities they may have like other employment and family responsibilities. Respite care such as the care receiver gong to day programs or alternatively having another member of the persons caregiving network step in for some hours or a day off for the caregiver. In counseling, social workers can provide information on the issues connected to the care receiver’s disease and progression, as well as skills of caregiving itself, including support services that are available.
