It is probably not by chance that little Zachery has a regular and healthy sleep schedule. Zachery is four months old and his father describes him as the "perfect infant" with a healthy sleep pattern. Discuss four safe and successful practices Zachery's parents may have used in an effort to develop his healthy sleep patterns
What will be an ideal response?
First, babies should sleep on their back for night time sleep and day naps in order to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Second, parents should make sure they purchase or use a safety-approved crib and never place their baby on soft sleep areas such as pillows, quilts, blankets, sheepskins, etc. Third, never allow smoking near a baby. Fourth, allow the child to use a clean pacifier, but do not force its use. Other strategies for encouraging good and safe sleep practices include: keep the baby close to, but separate from sleeping parents; keep soft toys or objects out of the baby's sleep area; do not let a baby become overheated during sleep, avoid products that claim to reduce SIDS; do not use home monitoring devices aimed at reducing the risk of SIDS; change the direction of a baby's position so that he/she does not develop the chance of a flat spot on the baby's head. It is not surprising that at 18-months Zachery is showing rapid gains in his language and communication skills, social development, and fine and large motor skill development.
Zachery's parents likely observe a regular bedtime to help him adjust his sleep and wake cycles to coincide more with day and night. They probably follow the warnings and recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The AAP guidelines for infants recommend that infants be placed on their backs to sleep in order to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. They also recommend that blankets, pillows, quilts, or any other soft or loose bedding should not be used. Infant cribs should have slats that are less than or equal to 2-3/8 inches apart to prevent infants from wedging their heads through the bars.
