In your opinion, can awareness that jealousy is an evolved emotion help those experiencing it? Elaborate.
What will be an ideal response?
In the interview, Buss mentions one case that a man approached him and said that reading of the evolved desire for sexual variety helped him stay faithful to his partner. That is, he was attracted to other women, but he remained conscious that this attraction is related to desire for sexual variety and that it doesn’t diminish his affection toward his wife. Similarly, it could be possible for a jealous person to recognize his or her fear of losing a partner and perhaps discuss it with him or her or discover the source of this fear. Moreover, it could prevent him or her from acting on these feelings. However, jealousy is related to a fear that one’s partner is unfaithful, and cheating partners are often trying very hard to conceal their infidelity. Therefore, one can always doubt if there are reasons for jealousy or not. And in this case, it would be hard to fully control jealousy solely with rational arguments. *No conclusive answer on this question is offered in the book, so it is really a matter of the student’s opinion. What is important is the fact that the student can see both aspects, pros and cons.
