Briefly explain a basic hydraulic circuit and its operation as it applies to an automatic transmission.

What will be an ideal response?

The oil pump, which is driven by the torque converter, rotates with the engine's crankshaft. Whenever the engine is running, the pump is operating. The pump pulls the fluid from the reservoir and through the filter, and it pressurizes the fluid. The pressurized fluid becomes line pressure and is controlled by a regulating device. This regulating device may be a regulator valve or an electronic pressure solenoid. The regulated line pressure moves to the main valve body and through the manual shift valve. From the manual shift valve, the fluid flows to the appropriate circuits to operate the various reaction members at the gear sets.
