There are few known risk factors for Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Those that are known include family history/genetics and geography/climate. The incidence of this type of diabetes increases as one travels further from the equator. It is also more common during winter months than in summer months. Possible risk factors associated with an increased risk of developing Type 1 diabetes also include exposure to a virus, low vitamin D levels, formula fed infants (rather than breastfed), and early introduction of solid foods to infants. Viruses currently being looked at as responsible include the coxsackie virus, Epstein- Barr virus, mumps virus or cytomegalovirus, all relatively common in early childhood and adolescence.
