HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, can spread from person to person in a variety of ways. It can spread through sexual contact and activity, especially during unprotected sex, and a person who already has other STIs is at increased risk. HIV can also be spread through the sharing of needles and other equipment in intravenous-drug use, and it can be transmitted by an infected mother to a child during pregnancy, birth, or breast-feeding.
