Explain a continuance in contemplation of dismissal

What will be an ideal response?

Judges may decide to order a continuance in contemplation of dismissal. If delinquents do not get into further trouble with the law within a specified period—often between six months and a year—judges will dismiss their cases. Continuance lets judges keep open their option for further action if juveniles do not obey the law. Judges might also continue cases until the fulfillment of specified conditions, including taking required diagnostic tests and treatment for disturbances stemming from emotional problems, substance abuse, and physical illness; observing curfew; paying restitution to victims; and performing community service. Delinquents usually are allowed one to six months to fulfill these conditions.
