Access, Comfort, and Trust--LGBTQ students take notice and appreciate when college programming involves them and when the college has policies of nondiscrimination to protect their rights as members of the LGBTQ community; Coming Out--Many LGBTQ students “come out” while at college. They may contemplate the risks and benefits of accepting their sexual orientation and revealing it to others; Healing From Oppression--When LGBTQ students experience anti-LGBTQ discrimination, may develop physical and mental health problems (D’Augelli, 1993); Coping With Stress, Anxiety, and Depression--Individuals who are LGBTQ are more likely to experience depression and anxiety than are their heterosexual counterparts, particularly if they feel isolated in a new setting; Surviving Suicidal Thoughts, Plans, or Attempts--Decades of research have reported a link between LGBTQ young people and suicide. College students who report having gender characteristics usually associated with their opposite sex tend to be at greater risk for suicidal symptoms, regardless of their sexual orientation (D’Augelli, 1993); Sexual Health Concerns--Sexually transmitted diseases have increased among members of the LGBTQ group; HIV/AIDS--After 13 years of declining rates of new HIV infection, studies have found that rates of new HIV infection among men who have sex with men have recently increased; Smoking--Approximately 43% of young gay men and lesbians aged 18–24 smoke, in comparison to 17% of the rest of the population; Drinking and Other Drug Use--It has been estimated that 20–25% of gay men and lesbians are heavy alcohol users. Gay and bisexual men have a higher addiction rate than heterosexual men with such drugs as marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy; Body Image--Both gay men and lesbians struggle with issues regarding their body images. Women in the gay community may become overweight, while gay men may struggle to achieve an exaggerated sense of male beauty.
