Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: Children with ASD demonstrate social problems, communication issues, repetitive behaviors, limited interests, unusual behaviors, are overly focused, good with details and numbers, slow to respond to questions or even their name, usually are limited in how often and how fast they will use gestures and point to objects or people, do not show affection through touch, and do not making eye contact. Knowing these typical characteristics of ASD, a teacher should prepare a lesson plan and create a classroom environment to meet the needs of a student with ASD. Lesson plan ideas include allowing for independent assignments, providing all directions in writing, verbally, and using pictures, having samples and models of finished products, giving wait time or preparing student for a question they will answer ahead of time, giving a student props to use instead of saying yes or to indicate the raising of a hand. Do not touch the shoulder or hands of the student; do not expect them to look at you or make eye contact. Allow the student to take on projects that involve time lines, numbers, or visuals. Provide a spot in the room to get away. Have headphones or ear plugs so the student can take away environmental noise. Try to give them a seat that they can rock in or move around if needed.
