What is lipoprotein-a (Lp(a)), and how does it affect cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk?

Fill in the blank(s) with the appropriate word(s).

Lp(a) is a genetic variation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. A high level of Lp(a) particles promotes blood clots and earlier development of atherosclerosis. It is thought that certain substances in the arterial wall interact with Lp(a) and lead to premature formation of plaque. As the plaque builds up, it blocks the blood vessels that supply the myocardium with oxygen and nutrients (the coronary arteries), and these obstructions can trigger a myocardial infarction, or heart attack. Approximately 10 percent of the population has elevated levels of Lp(a), and medication is typically used to lower it.
