A
A heavily pigmented, slightly elevated area visible in the iris can be a benign iris nevus or a malignant melanoma. An iris nevus is much more common than melanoma. When the inferior portion of the iris is obscured by blood, this is called a hyphema. It is caused by bleeding from vessels in the iris as a result of direct trauma to the globe or eye surgery. An iridectomy is surgical removal of part of the iris.
