What is picture piracy:
One of the big ethical problems on the Web is picture piracy. Because it is so easy to pull pictures off the Web, many people do so without permission. Many pictures are copyrighted; that is, someone owns them. To legally use them, you need to obtain permission or pay the owner or the artist.
Examples of efforts companies are making (student answers will vary):
For instance, the Disney Corporation has many copyrighted images. A quick review of the legal page on the Disney Web site explains their terms of use for much of their property. To protect what is theirs, Disney legal teams have taken legal action against Web site creators who have used or altered Disney's copyrighted images without securing the appropriate permissions.
Viewpoint on picture piracy (student's answers will vary). Possible topics that students may touch upon in their answers:
- Ethics
- Availability of pictures
- How pictures will be used
- Pictures in the public eye (i.e. news Web sites) versus private pictures (friend's photos)
- Citing the author/source of the picture
- Whether or not they have other copied a picture off the Internet, and how they feel about it
