Under normal conditions, a client computer sends a wired network server a request called a SYN. The server responds to the client with an ACK (acknowledgement) and then waits for a reply. To allow for a slow connection, the server might wait several minutes for the reply. When the client replies, the data transfer can begin.
A wired network DoS attack attempts to make the server unavailable by flooding it with requests. Clients send SYN requests to a server. Although the server responds to each request, the clients are programmed not to reply to the server's response. The server will "hold the line open" and continue to wait for a response (which is not coming) while receiving more requests and keeping those lines open for responses. After a short period, the server runs out of resources and can no longer function.
