Police misconduct is inappropriate or illegal behaviors of police officers. It includes actions committed by officers both on- and off-duty. The motivation for police misconduct varies, it may be personal, or financial, but it may also be for other reasons. The range of activities covered under police misconduct is wide and can cover everything from not so serious breaches of departmental policy to very serious violations of law. Police corruption is a subset of police misconduct. Police corruption is defined as Illegal behaviors committed by police officers who use their authority as police officers to commit crimes which are motivated by personal gain. The key difference is that corruption requires a personal motivation, which is usually financial gain, while police misconduct does not. In addition, police corruption is generally committed on-duty, although there are instances when it may occur off-duty.
