• Psychologists often categorize performance tests as either high or low fidelity.
• High-fidelity tests replicate job settings as realistically as possible. In a high-fidelity assessment, test takers use the same equipment that is used on the job and complete actual job tasks.
• Pilots are often trained and assessed on sophisticated flight simulators that not only simulate flight but also recreate typical emergencies. This would be a high fidelity test.
• Such high-fidelity tests allow job candidates to perform in realistic situations; however, they remove the risk for unsafe or poor performance.
• Low-fidelity tests simulate the task using a written, verbal, or visual description. The test taker may respond by answering an open-ended or multiple choice question.
• Some interview questions serve as low-fidelity performance tests.
• Situational judgment tests would be considered a low fidelity test.
